The Saltville Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit organization in October of 1991 with the goal of establishing a modern research and exhibit museum, outdoor interpretive trails and living history exhibits, and community outreach program that would encourage and facilitate the preservation, understanding, and appreciation of the natural and cultural heritage of the middle Appalachian region. This was primarily a grassroots effort that began many years before when it was realized that there was such a rich and distinctive history in the area.
The progress has proceeded steadily since the formation of the corporation. The original Foundation board understood the importance of enlisting the aid of people who were experienced in this process. As a result, this effort has grown to include many people who do not reside in the area but who are interested in Saltville and the formation of the museum.
On July 4th, 1998, the interim facility, a converted store building, was opened. Since that time, the museum's attendance has grown to an average of well over a thousand visitors per month. The current museum has reached its capacity for exhibits and services. Project "Mammoth" was launched in 2004 to expand operations into a building adjacent to the current site. Plans are underway to complete this expansion project within the next year.
Every effort is being made to make the Museum of the Middle Appalachians a premier, state of the art facility for the preservation and interpretation of our local heritage.
The Saltville Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
