Highlighting Winnetka

Centennial Park

225 Sheridan Road
Winnetka, IL 60093

Centennial Park is the southernmost of the five parks that line Winnetka's lakefront. The upper bluff consists of a large lawn area that is encircled by a winding concrete path and is screened from Sheridan Road by a series of berms, landscaped with trees, shrubs, and flowers. A section of the path along the east edge of the bluff that overlooks Lake Michigan is paved in bricks, some of which are engraved. Five benches are located around the upper lawn area. Drinking fountains are located at the southwest and north ends of the paths. A curbed asphalt parking lot with spaces for 11 cars and a turnaround circle is located on the northwest corner of the site.

A concrete loop path leads to a lower section of the bluff, off of which is a cluster of stepped outcropping stone and concrete paversknown as the Babize Memorial. An ornamental iron fence lines the top edge of the bluff. An electronic gate in the fence off thelower bluff section leads to a steel and wooden stairway that provides access to the beach. Sheet piling protects the bluff, which is planted with wildflowers. This site is used as the dog beach for the district (a card-swipe at the gate limits access to the beach forpatrons who purchase a beach pass for their dogs). Another bench and a wash area for the dogs are located just west of the gate to the beach. Additional site amenities include a bike rack near the northern drinking fountain, five waste receptacles, and a wooden vehicular gate at Sheridan Road entrance to the parking lot.
