The YMCA originated in London, England in 1844 and came to the United States in 1851 serving all ages of boys and men. After World War I, women and young girls became active in YMCAs and today more than half of all YMCA staff are women. Currently there are 2,750 YMCAs across the country and growing. The YMCA of DeKalb County was founded in 1914. Through its years of existence the Y has grown into a socially responsible organization that focuses on youth development and encouraging healthy lifestyles throughout the entire DeKalb County area. Our two locations included the Main Street YMCA founded in 1914 and the North Street YMCA, which was built in 1996. We are currently expanding our North Street location and expect to move in during the fall of 2014. Through our partnerships and working relations with numerous community organizations, the YMCA of DeKalb County serves thousands of people annually.
