The Wellmont Theater, Located at 5 Seymour St., off Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, NJ, built in 1922 as a legitimate theater and converted to a motion picture theater in 1929, originally had its entrance at 400 Bloomfield Avenue. In the 1930’s, Thomas Edison, inventor of motion pictures, attended movies at the Wellmont.
In 1951, it had a seating capacity of 2,137, and In the 1970’s the theater was tri-plexed and the entry was moved around the corner to the lobby’s former emergency exit. The original lobby is now a restaurant.
The Wellmont Theater closed in 2006. In 2008, new owners purchased it and executed a plan to reopen it as a concert and events venue. The Wellmont Theater reopened November 1, 2008 as a concert venue.
The three million dollar renovation included new electrical and plumbing systems, as well as new bars in the orchestra and mezzanine areas. In addition, the orchestra seats were removed and flat floor installed, making the venue flexible enough for seated, dance, and general admission shows.
The capacity is 2,600 (approximately 1,500 for seated shows), making it the largest theater venue in the area.
Beginning in September 2013, the Wellmont partnered with Live Nation, the world’s largest promoter, to book concerts and promote them at the theater. World-class talent in a enormous variety of genres is guaranteed to make the Wellmont a valuable resource to North Jersey music people and the town of Montclair as a whole.
