About Us:

Waterville Country Club is a semi-private golf course that has regularly made the top five courses in Golf Digest's best-in-state ratings. The club, started in 1916 is a 6442 yard par 70 eighteen hole course. It's conveniently located less than 2 miles from I-95 (Exit 127), Waterville and Colby College.

In 1916 a group of Waterville businessmen, doctors and lawyers purchased 158 acres and transferred it to the ownership of the club. To this day, with modest additions and subtractions, this land forms the basis of the club.

The original nine hole course was designed by the members. There was also tennis, target shooting and a fine shingled clubhouse with a wrap around porch. Today all that remains is golf and a new clubhouse. The original clubhouse is gone—destroyed by fire in 1977.

The 1930s were hard on the club. It went in and out of bankruptcy and was only saved by the efforts of its dedicated members. The 2nd World War also produced stress and financial problems. Sometime in the 1930s the original course was redone by Orin Smith who had been a construction supervisor for Donald Ross and Willie Park.

In 1967 the club built a second nine and reworked the original nine. The new eighteen hole course, designed by Geoffrey S. Cornish, opened on June 1, 1967. The new clubhouse opened in May, 1978.
