Founded in 1990 as Washington Shakespeare Company, WSC Avant Bard is a performing arts organization dedicated to producing primarily classic works, both time-tested and contemporary; emphasizing a provocative, bold approach in an intimate setting; and training and showcasing the best emerging talent in the region, mentored by seasoned, professional theatre artists.

At WSC Avant Bard, we are in the business of discovery. Since our days in Clark Street we have been dedicated to creating and cultivating new talent to breathe life into the classics. Taking risks with previously known work, and making bold and exciting choices in performance, Avant Bard is the home for innovation in theatre for the Northern Virginia/DC Metro Area. Avant Bard is a family of artists committed to bringing to life the works of influential playwrights such as Shakespeare, Stoppard and Williams in a way that engages and entices a 21st century audience. As a company at the heart of the nation's capital, we also bring our edgy approach to famous American playwrights to inspire and challenge preconceptions of American Theatre.
