Washington Crossing Historic Park

Mission Statement:

Washington Crossing Historic Park preserves and interprets for citizens and visitors the site at which General George Washington planned and executed his daring crossing of the Delaware River on December 25, 1776, leading to victory in the Battle of Trenton and turning the tide of the Revolutionary War, as well as the social and economic history of this important location.

Goals:

To present and preserve the historic site, structures and landscape and present educational programs, exhibits, and special events that broaden public understanding of Washington Crossing’s and Pennsylvania’s significant contribution to the American Revolution. Major themes to be presented include:

The Crossing as a military event and the life at the Crossing at the time of the American Revolution, including political, social and economic activities within the context of farm and village life.
How and why the Crossing came to be seen and memorialized as a significant event by generations of Americans, expressed most clearly in the classic painting of the event by Emmanuel Leutze.
Taylorsville and its evolution from a ferry crossing into a site with national historical significance as well as its subsequent economic growth.
The importance of the river and river transportation in the area from its first settlement by Native Americans to the present as a context for the great event which Washington Crossing celebrates.
