History
The Warren Symphony Society, Inc., parent organization of the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in June, 1965 and has been a nonprofit organization since its inception. Its mission is to provide cultural experiences and music education throughout the Mahoning Valley. The primary goal is to provide cultural experiences that enrich the lives of all citizens, especially children. During the first five years of existence, the WPO was called the Warren Symphony Society, and for three seasons was conducted by John Blackwell. In 1968, George Zack became music director and conductor. Dr. Zack currently holds the title of Conductor Laureate. During the 1999-2000 season, the orchestra’s name was changed to the WPO and renowned conductor Susan Davenny Wyner was named music director/conductor.
The history of the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra is replete with programs that provide cultural enrichment for underserved populations. In the 1990’s, Dr. Zack began a partnership with the Trumbull County Schools that has grown to include programs for thousands of youth annually. Today, this youth outreach is critical to the community as all schools in Trumbull County have eliminated string music education. If WPO programs were not available to this community, thousands of area youth and adult citizens would never experience this cultural art form.
