Our Mission:
The Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the birthplace of Volleyball, is a not for-profit institution dedicated to honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to this international sport and to fostering the appreciation of the historical development of the game by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting its collections for a global audience.
About Us:
In 1895, at the Holyoke YMCA, William G. Morgan (Then the Y's Physical Education Director) needed an activity for the local businessmen. He wanted something with a strong athletic impulse but not physical contact. He came up with a game he called Mintonette.
Fast forward some 117 years later and the game now called "Volleyball" is the second most popular team sport in the world. Over 220 national federations are affiliated with the FIVB and the game has become an Olympic favorite since its start in 1964.
In 1978 the Volleyball Hall of Fame was incorporated in Holyoke, Massachusetts - The birthplace of the sport.
Today, the museums artifacts are presented as a state of the art experience and now the hall's outreach extends beyond Holyoke to every corner of the World. In 1998 the hall of fame completed a renovation project to improve the museum experience for all of our visitors. This has been the most sweeping renovation project in our history adding over 4,000 square feet of new exhibition space. We've always had the world's greatest volleyball collection, now we can share more of it with our visitors.
