About the Topeka Quarter Midget Association
The Topeka Quarter Midget Association (TKQMA) has been in existence for over 50 years. The race track located at 1121 SW University Blvd. Topeka, KS 66619, just west of Forbes Field. TKQMA has been a longstanding member club of the Quarter Midgets of America (QMA) and is currently a member of region 7. QMA is a non-profit organization with over 2500 family memberships and approximately 4,000 drivers. There are 13 QMA Regions and 50 Quarter Midget Clubs in the USA and Canada.
Our Topeka club currently has over forty member families with 40 registered drivers involved in a family oriented sport for kids 5 - 16 racing specially prepared cars on 1/20 mile oval. The cars, rules and safety procedures are designed specifically for kids. Safety features include full roll cages, multi-point seat harness, full face helmets and other gear. The sport has fewer injuries than little league football. The racing environment is about children and family. Not only do kids learn valuable skills and sportsmanship, but the also make new friends throughout the sport.
Together, the clubs families raised over $100,000 to build the new, state-of-the-art banked concrete oval racetrack on University Blvd. The new racing facility constructed "just for kids 5-16 ³ includes a scoring tower, concession stand, covered bleachers, seats, a large staging area, plenty of free parking and indoor restroom facilities. This racing facility is one of the largest and safest tracks in the country.
The Topeka club hosted the 2002 QMA Eastern Grand National Races and the 2006 QMA Western Grand National Races. The 2006 "Grands" brought over 800 registered race cars from 13 regions across the country to compete at TKQMA.
On the local level, TKQMA races most Sundays, beginning in late March or April thru October. During the summer months the schedule includes "Saturday Night Races under the lights." Many of our families and drivers travel to other regional and national races across the country, as do other region clubs to Topeka for many special events.
At the end of the racing season the club hosts an annual awards banquet where all of the drivers receive recognition with trophies and awards for their accomplishments - both in points and participation.
The Topeka Quarter Midget Association welcomes each family into the club and is prepared to assist them in many ways. The Novice Training Program prepares drivers and families to race. The club provides mentoring support in car set-up and racing technique for several week's races or until the new drivers and "handlers" feel comfortable. This "mentoring support" is an important part of the club's direction for new racing families.
