Tishomingo County Archives And History Museum

In 1995, when TCHGS was chartered, our goal was to someday establish a county archives. The Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum became a reality in 2003.

This courthouse is the third courthouse for Tishomingo County. It has played an important role in the lives of the people of this area. The land where the old structure now stands was acquired in 1857 from Lemuel Hubbard, a Tishomingo County landowner. According to historical account, the Tishomingo County Courthouse, which was built in 1870 at a cost of $5,000, burned in 1886 and the current structure was erected in 1888. Former Governor J. M. Stone supervised the erection. The court held its first session here in 1889. Over the years, hundreds of couples from Tennessee and Alabama came to Iuka  o be married due to favorable waiting period laws in Mississippi. It has been the site of much political activity, including speeches by James K. Vardaman and Theodore G. Bilbo.
