Our Mission:
Educating people about the environmental necessity, economic value and natural beauty of native plants in the Northeast.
The Native Plant Center at Westchester Community College is dedicated to educating people about the importance of wildflowers and native plants of the Northeast.
The not-for-profit Native Plant Center is a project of the Westchester Community College Foundation.
We are proud to be the first national affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas, a national organization devoted to America's native plants. We extend the educational and environmental concepts of the Texas Center to this region.
As a community resource, we share information on choosing, growing, and maintaining native plants. We sponsor events, such as classes in the spring and fall and host Wildflower Symposia, workshops and conferences featuring nationally known speakers. We co-sponsor conferences off-site on general environmental issues. Read more about our past, present and future programming in the Years in Review.
As part of our educational mission, we have installed the Lady Bird Johnson Demonstration Garden on the Westchester Community College campus, at the East Grasslands entrance to the college. It contains native species which will thrive in the Northeast. There is no better way to learn about and understand these plants than by watching them grow, mature, flower and seed.
We work with Westchester County on plant lists and consult on native plantings on golf courses. We have also worked with the New York State Department of Transportation to create wildflower meadows along the roadsides.
As part of our outreach, we have a Wildflower and Native Plant Sale in the spring, and sponsor "Visions of Nature", an art and photography show and sale in the fall.
