Our interest in beer started many years ago in Omaha, NE. We never knew that home brewing in our basement with a small brew kit would lead to Sound To Summit Brewing. We truly believe that the people we have met and the adventures and educational paths we have taken have led us to our current endeavor.
Our adventures climbing mountains and sailing in the Puget Sound, helped develop the name and the simplicity of the logo.
Creighton University School of Dentistry Endodontic Instructor and College of Idaho Alum, Kenneth Knowles D.D.S., gave us an inspiration by giving all of his brewing equipment to us to brew beer.
After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2007, we upgraded the brewing system and continued to make beer for our family and friends. One summer, during a neighborhood get together, we decided we would open a microbrewery. Three years later, Sound To Summit brewing opened in December 2014.
The head brewer, Grady Warnock, graduated from the University of Washington's biological science program with high honors and a bachelor's degree in 2012. His interest in science and passion for craft beer were joined in union when he decided to start homebrewing. As an active member and former board member of the Greater Everett Brewers League (GEBL), Grady sought out tips from other members on how to improve his techniques and recipes as well as reading many books on designing recipes and brewing science.
After becoming acquainted with John Sype(a fellow homebrewer) and exchanging some impressive beers with him, John offered Grady the position as head brewer of the brewing company they were establishing. From there, the Sypes sent Grady to the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, the oldest brewing school in America, where he earned his brewing certificate. In the following months, Grady was involved in the construction of the brew house and tap room, and continued improving his recipes using his ten gallon homebrew system. He continues to learn and experiment with new styles and flavors. Follow along with us to see what new things emerge!
