About Us:
Dedicated to preserve the history of the settlement of New Braunfels by "The Society for the Protection of German Emigrants to Texas" in 1844-1847 and the subsequent development of this city and area of Texas. The Sophienburg Museum relates the history through the display of artifacts and displays of early life in New Braunfels. The Sophienburg Archives preserves the written history of the area through thousands of collections of personal and public documents.
Visit the Sophienburg Museum and take a delightful trip back to the mid 1800's when New Braunfels was founded by Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels. Hundreds of artifacts and exhibits help transport the visitor to a much different time when hardships dealt with nature and overcoming the elements. View the boyhood home of Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels through the magical reproduction of the castle and village created by famous Texas artist Jonas Perkins. Hear the story of the founding of New Braunfels from one of the volunteer docents while viewing artifacts depicting the events surrounding it.
Imagine the early German families joining in musical entertainment on instruments brought from the old country. Visualize the men's singing societies joining in song to celebrate every conceivable occasion. See how New Braunfels quickly grew into an industrial giant of the era, becoming the fourth largest city in Texas in 1850. Read how New Braunfels was the first city in Texas to tax their citizens to provide free schooling for their children. See early bi-lingual education at work. Visit Naegelins Bakery, an orphanage, the pharmacy, a general store, a doctors office, a shoemaker, a master cabinet maker, a barbershop, a saloon and much more, all in a short stroll through memory lane at the Sophienburg Museum.
