About Us:

Located on spacious, beautifully landscaped grounds, the 1929 brick home of Charles and Esther Snyder was developed into the Snyder Museum by the members of the Morehouse Historical Society in 1972.

Since the property was donated to the Police Jury (governing body) of Morehouse Parish by the four Snyder children and their families, the former garage was converted into a workshop and meeting room. Through the efforts of the Clark Lea Garden Club, the Garden Room was later added. The Carraige House was also added to the grounds to display farm and transportation artifacts.

Born in Russia in 1882 Charles Snyder came to Morehouse Parish in 1899. From a humble start as a dry goods merchant he built the business, with the help of his three sons, into a department store which became the largest retail outlet in the area until the arrival of today's discount stores. When built, and even today, the house and grounds became a showplace on the main highway into Bastrop from the east.

Today, beneath the tall southern pines and other trees of the area, beautiful azaleas, camellias and other shrubs are surrounded by large beds of seasonal flowers maintained, year round, by volunteer workers. Picnic tables and restroom facilities are available for travelers who would like to take a look at life in the past in this area.

The display of artifacts from our past and current monthly exhibition of work by area artists offer the visitor an educational, entertaining, and refreshing spot to visit!
