Shackett's Super Market in Bristol has been serving customers for 70 years and is the longest operating, family-owned business in the Newfound region.
The original store was purchased at the end of World War II, by Ralph L. Shackett. It was located on the common in Alexandria, NH. In its early years, Shackett's was a general store selling everything from meats and grain to hardware. Mr. Shackett, himself, would personally deliver to most customers as not many had automobiles. The site of the store still stands today and is now a private residence.Â
In 1945, due to the growing popularity of Newfound Lake as a vacation destination, Mr. Shackett built a new store at the foot of the lake. The store remained at that location for six years. Today that very building is now the popular Big Catch Restaurant.
In 1960, Shackett's moved to its current location, 256 West Shore Road in Bristol. Shacketts is located on the shores of picturesque Newfound Lake.Â
Shackett's has undergone two major renovations at its current location. The first, taking place in 1970, doubled the size of the store and take-out restaurant. The store remained virtually unchanged for the next 20 years. The second renovation took place in November of 1989, when the store burned to the ground after a devastating fire. The store was closed for that winter and a bigger store was rebuilt.Â
The store reopened to the public on May 5, 1990 - six months after the fire. This is the store now standing today.
