The gently rolling hills, lush native vegetation and towering cottonwood and oak trees make San Rafael State Natural Area a treat for any nature enthusiast. Nestled in a valley, this area is the headwaters of the Santa Cruz River, a vital life source for the diverse riparian habitat that thrives here. Visitors may take pleasure in viewing the rare plant life that grow along the river, such as the currently endangered Huachuca Water Umbel and a variety of wildlife that occupy the area. It is not uncommon to catch sight of javalina, antelope, cougar, coyote, mule deer, and a various breeds of birds unique to this region. A territorial style ranch house stands on the park's property, which has been featured in several films, and was listed as a National Historic District.Fees, permits, and reservations may apply.
