In 1992, Momokawa Sake, Ltd. was established as a joint venture between Frost International Group Inc. and Momokawa Brewing Inc. of Japan. A year later, the name was changed to The Japan America Beverage Co., focusing on importing sake from Japan for the U.S. market. What started as a sake importer, it soon became a part of the sake-making business once it became apparent that sake-making in Oregon was possible and there was a market for it. The original owner chose Oregon because he believed that the best quality water for sake was located in the Northwest, specifically on the east slope of the coast range. Water is one of the most important ingredients when it comes to making sake, which made Forest Grove, Oregon the ideal location. The company later changed its name to SakeOne in 1996 to reflect the goal of being the number one sake company in America. In 1997, the construction of the Kura had been completed and the first brewed bottles under the Momokawa and Moonstone labels came the following year. Between the two product lines Momokawa and Moonstone, SakeOne has won more awards than any other sake company in America and continues to strive for innovation and creating the best quality sake for its consumers.

Today SakeOne is one of six sake brewing facilities in America and the only sake brewery in Oregon. Additionally, SakeOne imports some of the finest Japanese made sake and distributes them throughout the American market. It is important to SakeOne that the U.S. is educated about the sake world and wants to squash the assumptions that sake is a beverage that must be consumed warm. The sake produced at SakeOne is to be served chilled, much like a white wine, and simply enjoyed in a wine glass. To learn more about the art of sake, come to the Kura for a tour and afterwards head to the tasting room to enjoy some premium sake.
