In its beginnings, from 1976 to 1986, the Drama Committee of the Russell Arts Council produced thirty-one productions. In 1986, Russell Community Theatre, Inc. was incorporated as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit Kansas corporation . The vast majority of productions have been presented in either Ruppenthal Middle School Auditorium or the Russell Elks Lodge.
In 1989, RCT purchased the building at 839 Main Street as an office, warehouse and shop. Then, in 1992, the quarter block east of 839 Main was purchased as a possible site for a small theatre.
Twenty-seven stockholders each hold one share of stock with an additional thirteen shares authorized. The stockholders elect a seven-member Board of Directors annually. The Board, in turn, selects a chair and elects a president and secretary-treasurer as the corporate officers.
The mission of Russell Community Theatre:
To produce and perform live theatre for the enlightenment and enjoyment of the audience.
To train and educate the actors and production crews in the theatre arts.
To promote and broaden the opportunities for personal growth and friendship through participation in theatre.
