Rehoboth Country Club is proud to announce that they are celebrating their 45th year of business. Throughout the 45 years, RCC has seen a great deal of changes, but what remains the same is their dedication to their customers and the love of the game.
The Golf Course has been a family affair since it opened in 1966. The owner, Harry Shock started what was only a dream and turned it into a reality. As a young man, he began by scoping out farmland in Rehoboth, and after casting his eyes on the old Goff Dairy Farm land, he knew he had found the right spot. He hired the most renowned golf course architect in the area, Geoffrey Cornish, to create a design. Cornish made sure that the course was a true challenge for the average golfer, and one of the most notable trademarks of RCC became the greens. They are very large and slope back to front, which proves to be a bit more challenging, but also aides in the drainage, which is beneficial for the overall maintenance, and appearance of the greens.
In order to bring his design to fruition, Harry needed to employ people who he could always rely on, so in the very early stages, it was not uncommon to see one of his 4 daughters or his wife Mary, working on the course. From raking out the soon to be fairways, to burning brush, to selling ready made sandwiches to the earliest golfers, it was clear to see that the Shock family was dedicated to making the business work.
The one characteristic that has remained unchanged is the family atmosphere. The entire corporation is operated by Harry’s daughters, and various other family members are employed throughout. Harry’s son-in-law manages the pro shop, and his grandchildren are usually seen in all areas, from cutting grass, to serving drinks. The future is bright for RCC, and the family is ever growing. In the next 40 years, his great grandchildren may even be seen burning brush or maintaining the greens and fairways, as his daughters did when it was first established.
