The museum is located in the Cimarron Historic District one mile south of intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and NM 21 (via NM 21)
The four-story building is now owned by the CS Cattle Company which allows the Cimarron Historical Society to operate it as a museum. The collection includes Native American tools, weapons and pottery; Maxwell Land Grant paperwork and documents; antique surgical equipment; place settings and silver from the original St. James Hotel. The museum is open May-October, Monday-Saturday, 9AM-5PM and Sunday, 1PM-5PM.
A noted SFT landmark, the stone-block Aztec Mill built in 1864 was operated as a grist mill by Lucien Maxwell until 1870. Here trail travelers bought flour for the last push to Santa Fe and Ute and Jicarilla Apaches were issued government rations. In the Cimarron Historic District on the Mountain Route of the Santa Fe Trail.
