Mission: The company serves as a conduit for the best in contemporary world theatre for the benefit of American audiences and theatre professionals, artistic values of the production and freedom of artistic expression being our primary concern.
The company's goal is twofold: to infuse new life into the classics... revealing why they are still contemporary in spirit; and to unveil the timelessness of modern plays... which, in turn, may become the classics of the future, our special focus being on neglected masterpieces of great artists that were somehow overlooked or misrepresented at the time they were first produced due to being ahead of its time, and whose time has now come. This doesn't mean to dress Hamlet in jeans and a leather jacket, but to find out what we have in common with him: feelings, thoughts, trepidations, anxiety, etc... in other words to make the play current for a contemporary audience. For it is only a matter of definition to divide artists into classics and contemporaries. There is in fact an unbroken chain of great minds of humanity, everlasting beacons of human experience, no matter dead or alive. They are always present. Our task is to make them current for the audience: here, today, now.
We truly believe that American theatre deserves the kind of audience it used to have, the true theatre audience who would feel their lives unfulfilled without going to theatre every one or two weeks to see a piece itself and not just another star in it. Our greatest challenge therefore is to nurture and develop through our mission that kind of audiences by utilizing the variety of styles and genres and bringing back world theatre traditions, ranging from Ancient Greeks to nowadays, using them in the context of our times and bettering thereby the quality of our productions.
