About Us:
The Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum in Onawa, IA, provides a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy, and often take for granted in our busy day-to-day lives
It honors and remembers over 6,000 Monona County Veterans from the Mexican War through the current day including those who have served through peace time and the uncertain days and years of the Cold War.
You'll be able to see photographs, uniforms, books, movies and other memorabilia from all the wars, and how these images and items related to the contributions made by Monona County Veterans in many famous and infamous battles throughout history.
This visual experiences provide you with a whole new perspective, especially as they involve your friends, your neighbors even your relatives...things that will surprise you and that you would not even imagine of these otherwise unassuming individuals, these heroes.
It also remembers the history of wars, providing a closer look at how now famous battles and events throughout the world's history have affected Veterans and their families locally. Not only the sacrifices and hardships experienced by our Veterans and the sacrifices made here at home on behalf of the war effort, but the great loss of life as a result of the war. Perhaps even more importantly the subsequent lost contributions that these individuals may have added to our society.
The Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum was construced to teach our young people for current and future generations about these sacrifices. To instill patriotism and pride of Country in these generations and those yet to come, and for us not to lose sight of the valuable lessons war should teach us.
Winston Churchill once said that "a Country that is not reminded of its past, is doomed to repeat it."
The Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum has the distinction of being the only Memorial Museum of its kind in the State of Iowa and in those states which surround Iowa.
We hope that once you have visited the Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum, you will leave with a renewed pride in this Great Country in which we live and the bright red, white and blue colors of our beautiful American Flag!
