About Us
The word Luna Rossa, meaning "Red Moon", is the inspiration behind our quest to create great wines from the finest vineyards in New Mexico. Luna Rossa offers a warm, enchanting setting where visitors can enjoy great wines and wonderful times with family and friends. With our successes we have added a second tasting room located in Mesilla, New Mexico in which you can enjoy a similar atmosphere.
Luna Rossa was founded in 2001 by Paolo and Sylvia D'Andrea; they have together put their hard work and dedication in building a great winery. Paolo was born and raised in the region of Friuli, which is located in the northeast part of Italy. He comes from a heritage of four generations of wine growers. Since a young age he has been involved in grape growing and wine making. He graduated from a college of viticulture in Spilimbergo, Italy with an expertise in grafting vine plants. He came to the United States in 1986 and was hired to teach the Hispanic laborers how to prune the vineyard for a large company in New Mexico.
He loved the area and felt that it would be a great challenge to try to work his own vineyard some day. He was later hired by New Mexico Vineyards, Inc. to manage a 300 acre vineyard; it is the largest vineyard in New Mexico. He produces grapes for the wine industry that supplies grapes throughout New Mexico and Texas. Paolo's main goal was to prove that desert land could produce grapes successfully and has succeeded in doing so. The wines he produces are made up of 100% New Mexico grapes grown in our vineyards. The wine has now been in production for over seven years and has competed in many wine competitions from state to international and been awarded amongst the highest ranks. His desire was to give the area something different, educated the community and to teach people the great sophistication of wine.
