The Lost Coast Brewery and Café began with a dream. In 1986 Barbara Groom, a pharmacist wondered what it would require to start a brewpub. After years honing her skills home brewing, planning and studying scores of pubs throughout England & Wales Barbara was ready to transform the dream into a reality.
After purchasing the Pythian Castle, a 100-year-old building in Eureka, California, in 1989 the café was ready to open. The building, a restored wood frame structure constructed in 1892 was purchased from the original owners, The Fraternal Order of the Knights of Pythias.  Lost Coast Brewery and Café became a living dream in July of 1990 after spending the winter and spring engaged in extensive remodeling.
The cool maritime climate of the Humboldt Bay region has proved to be very conducive to brewing quality ales. The year round average temperature of 55º Fahrenheit is ideal for top-fermenting ale yeast. While embracing the rich tradition of English-style ales, Master Brewer Barbara Groom has added a distinctive West Coast flavor to her ales by brewing with Western Plains barley and wheat and the exceptionally clean water of Humboldt County.
Since its humble beginning in 1990, the brewery has outgrown not just its original facility in the Pythian Castle, but has also outgrown the site it moved to in 1993 just down the street. After a long successful 25 years and breaking two production records in 2005 with 24,000 barrels, and 2009 with over 50,000 barrels, the brewery is now located at the south end of Eureka, California in a brand new state of the art facility. Barbara Groom designed it to not only make exceptional brews in, but to be open for the public to enjoy as well, opening Summer 2015. Currently the new facility is brewing at a 90,000-barrel capacity and is still working to brew to greater heights! Lost Coast Brewery is the 43rd largest craft brewery in the United States distributing its fine ales in 22 states, three Canadian Providences, Puerto Rico, Australia, Costa Rica, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and France!
