Keyhole State Park

Keyhole State Park is located on the western edge of the famed Black Hills, between Sundance and Moorcroft, and is easily accessed off I-90 at exit 165. The Keyhole Dam, an earthfill structure, was completed by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1952. Within site of Devils Tower, Keyhole State Park is a mecca for both resident and migrating birds of all species, and offers excellent fishing for walleye, catfish, smallmouth bass, and northern pike.

Beach

Keyhole State Park has one area identified as a beach area.

The beach area has several restrictions:

There are no pets allowed in the beach area.
There is no fishing allowed in the beach area as well.
No boat traffic is allowed in the area.

Boating

Keyhole State Park is on Keyhole Reservoir, which has 14,720 acres of navigable water for fishing and recreational use.

More information:

Boats must be properly registered and inspected prior to launching for aquatic invasive species.
Please ensure your boat is properly equipped with safety equipment, i.e., life jackets, fire extinguishers, etc.

Campsites For RVs

Keyhole State Park has 10 campgrounds with a total of 286 RV and tent camping sites. The Tatanka campground is the only campground which has amenities (water and electricity hookups). This campground also requires a reservation during the summer season (May 1st thru Sept 30th). All other sites are open to first come-first served.

Fishing

Keyhole Reservoir has over 14,000 acres for your fishing pleasure. There are a total of 5 boat ramps to launch your boat from. Fishing from shore is also a great way to spend some quality family time. There is a large variety of fish, from the smaller crappie and perch, to the larger fish such as small mouth bass, walleye and the really large northern pike. We also have drum and catfish in the lake.

Fishing licenses can be obtained at the Keyhole Marina, or the Empire Guest House and Paradise Grocery Store in Pine Haven.
Fishermen must also have a conservation stamp.

Group Picnic Shelters

Keyhole State Park has three reservable group shelter sites. These shelters can be reserved through the Park Headquarters. Each shelter has lighting and electrical outlets for your convenience. They also have a large grill, fire rings and tables available. Keyhole also has an additional 3 picnic sites, which are first come-first serve. These shelters do not have lighting or electricity.

Hiking

Keyhole State Park has two hiking trails. The Marina Trail is of concrete, and is an easy 1.5 miles long trek. The second trail is 2.8 miles long, and is a bit more challenging.

Hunting

Keyhole State Park allows hunting within the boundary of the the area controlled by the Bureau of Reclamation. Hunters are able to take antelope, deer, turkey and waterfowl. Bow hunting for carp is also allowed, but there are separate rules which govern when and where you can hunt.

Picnic Areas

Keyhole State Park has a number of picnic areas. There are 3 reservable picnic shelters, and 4 non-reservable picnic areas.

Playgrounds

Keyhole State Park has 3 playgrounds, each with swings, climbing structures and slides.

Swimming

Visitors to Keyhole State Park may swim anywhere on the lake except in the boat ramp areas and around the dock system at the marina. Keyhole has a beach area set aside specifically for swimming. There are no boats or fishing allowed in the beach area.

Winter Sports

Keyhole State Park is a wonderful place for winter sports. We have some of the best Ice fishing available. The lake is 14,000 acres of frozen ice open to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, or just ice skating.
