Trail users can take one of two routes to Red Mountain Trail. A partially paved road that gradually morphs into a dirt surface is the easier option for both hiking and biking. This road climbs efficiently, but never too steeply, up above Glenwood Springs to a viewpoint next to “the cross” which is lit up seasonally at night.

The interconnected segments of single track are the Jeanne Golay Trail and this route is popular with hikers and as a decent ride for bikers. A sign at the trailhead points the way and the trail is clearly marked along the route. Both the road and trail meet at the summit where visitors have views of Glenwood Springs below, Glenwood Canyon to the east and Mt. Sopris to the south.

Climbing Red Mountain Trail is hard work but the breathtaking views at the top will be well worth it. Gaze upon the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers from above! And don't miss the views of Mt. Sopris and Elk Range. Take note of the bright orange colored lift towers. They are the relics of Red Mountain Ski Area, Glenwood’s original ski hill which operated from 1941-1952.
