We are chefs, and we are winemakers in Portland, Oregon. Transplanted from San Francisco in 1994, we arrived with many other food lovers in this small city, a community that has grown to represent a 21st century renaissance of artisan producers of ingredients for good living.
Over the years, we had the good fortune to befriend winery owners, winemakers and sellers, among others. In typical Oregon fashion, doors opened, technique shared, opportunity to spend time in the winery with kind-hearted, enthusiastic people that came our way. We took the plunge and began making wine as ‘Garagistes’ in 2003, and over the vintages took in all we could from these experiences. Vacations revolved around the October crush, in the winery, in the garage, making wine by the barrel, as it is done…
Twenty-five years and counting in the food and wine business, Jan Marc Wine Cellars was founded in 2009 in Portland, Oregon.
The winery is located in the Overlook of beautiful North Portland, a quiet residential neighborhood with nearby commercial districts in every direction. Tucked inside our converted two-car garage, our limited production wines occupy a 350 square foot structure that is a marvel of efficiency. We like to have a range of varieties to enjoy with our meals; cool climate Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Riesling of the Willamette Valley, big reds from the warm east side of Oregon, and the barrel-fermented Chardonnay. Each of these are produced in small lots. Minimal handling and intervention allow the wine to express vintage, site; history.
The Pacific Northwest region begs constant explorations of seasonal foods, their origins, entertaining, menus and wines. The great bounty of individuals who reside here as restaurateurs, winemakers, cheese mongers, farmers, hunters, foragers and fishermen, all welcome us to share a bit of their life.
