2013 marks the 51st anniversary of Iron Masters Country Club. Originally named Pleasant View Country Club, Iron Masters was derived from workers mining iron ore during the Civil War era and continuing into the 20th Century.
The rich iron ore found on the property was removed by open pit method and was the beginning of the vast fortunes amassed by the ironmasters from the various iron furnaces in and around Blair and Bedford Counties. The open pit mining is still very evident at several locations including the par 3, 13th. Those pits are now filled with water which are a natural source of irrigation and natural hazards.
The golf course opened for play in 1962 and was designed by The Ault and Jamison Architectural Firm of Silver Springs, MD. Over the years, Ault and his firm have designed several local and Mid Atlantic Region favorites such as Sinking Valley Country Club in Tyrone, Toftrees Resort in State College, and TPC Avenel which is the former host of the PGA Tour Kemper Open.
In 1977, the Iron Masters Golf Committee formed a plan for the first Iron Masters Golf Classic. The event was a two man, best ball, match play tournament. The original field was 64 teams divided into four flights. Today, the “Classic” has grown to become the most popular event hosted by Iron Masters and attracts a field of 128 teams and eight flights. Several of Central Pennsylvania’s finest amateurs compete annually in the three day, best ball stroke play event.
