Gneiss was founded out of a passion for a beverage that transcends time.  We are inspired to create Gneiss, balanced beers that touch on the characteristics of the old age of brewing and layer them with the nuances, and often the eccentricity of the modern era of brewing.  We look to our German heritage, our love of science and precision and combine that with our Maine way of living to bring you truly rockable beers!
At Gneiss we strive to source as much raw material as we can from our property and the surrounding farms.  This is a difficult endeavor as we start from what was a wooded lot as late as March 2012.  We will use pigs and, in the future, goats to work the land so that we may grow as much of our own fruits, hops, and wheat as possible for estate ales.  Currently, we grow our own hops for small batches and recently transplanted 94 cuttings from of our original rhizomes up to Doles Orchard to increase our production.  We have started experimenting with growing summer and winter wheat for our Gneiss, weizen-centric brews.  We plan to source local fruits and cider from Doles Orchard for some of our favorite wild beers as well.
