Sandra and her husband David started planting wine grapes within a 100 acre farm dedicated to a garden, an airstrip, and a hangar in which David built and stored his small planes. After David passed away suddenly in 2004, Sandra's son J.D. joined her and helped develop the farm into a full vineyard, dedicating it to David's pasttime and its home along the runway. A partnership formed out of their friendship with Matt & Maria Sorensen, and in the Spring of 2008 the FHLV brand was started. (FHLV stands for Fly High & LongSword Vineyards.) The Tasting Room was built a year later, and Matt Sorensen became a very busy winemaker for both vineyards.
Our Winery is one of those special projects that took a whole lot of dreaming. The old airplane hangar had seen little action since David's plane building days, so herein lay the perfect location for a winery, or so we imagined. Converting the hangar to a fully functioning winery took many family members, many friends, and two years to finish. To all involved, the Winery's completion seems astonishing; some of those materials had to have been pulled out of thin air. Let's just say our first crush was interesting...but boy, are we proud!
