About:
Herb Houston and Debbie Gebeyehu decided to carry on a special wine-making tradition because Debbie's mother "Enat," for many years made honey wine for family and friends. Her honey wine was served during special occasions or given away as gifts and was enjoyed by everyone. She used a recipe that was passed on by her forebears. Today, Herb and Debbie are owners of the winery, one of the nations largest producers of Ethiopian style honey wine at their 2,500 square foot warehouse and production facility in Oakland.
ENAT Winery
Honey is used instead of grapes and unlike other wines, honey wine does not have the alcoholic after-taste. We have two brands, Traditional and Orange. It's a dessert wine that many serve with spicy foods. Others use it for cooking or as a health drink. It doesn't have the sulfites or preservatives that other wines have. They use a unique form of hops called Gesho, an herb from Ethiopia. It's 12 percent alcohol, but it's a natural wine.
