Since Edmunds St. John began, in 1985, we've purchased all the grapes from which we've made wine. We've worked with fruit from dozens of vineyards over the years, but in recent years we've narrowed the number of sites down to four. The grapes we use that are grown in three of those four vineyards were planted there at our request. They're all managed by Ron Mansfield, with whom we've worked closely, now, for more than 25 years, a collaboration that has been, for us, a source of inspiration, and energy, and great satisfaction.
The fourth vineyard source is Unti Vineyards, in Dry Creek Valley, near Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It's one from which we sought to buy grapes for a couple of seasons, before they had any to offer us. The Untis practice biodynamic farming in their vineyards, resulting in exceptionally healthy soils, and beautiful grapes.Without tireless, thoughtful, and attentive work in the vineyards, winemaking is unlikely to amount to much; it is the very good work at these vineyards that allows us the opportunity to make wines that are delciious, and memorable.
