Our History
Brewing since 1990, Durango Brewing Company is one of the oldest breweries in Colorado. With heritage that dates back to 1886 when Durango Beer and Ice Company became Durango Brewing Company, we are proud to be part of Colorado’s beer history.
Starting as a small brewery with room for only 11 people in the taproom Durango Brewing Company has seen growth and change as the craft beer industry has gained main-stream momentum. As the industry has changed so have we- what once was the original taproom is now our grain handling room. We have added additional fermentation tanks over the years and eventually purchased the entire building, allowing us to expand into the current space that houses the taproom and kitchen in 2007. In 2016 Durango Brewing Company completed renovations to the building and taproom that included a new roof and parking lot, interior updates and an expanded patio.
Our brewers pride themselves on making quality beers. Our beers are hand crafted using the finest barley, hops, and yeast along with water born high in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado.
Classic styles, with a refined and updated take, our year round beers offer homage to the original beers brewed at Durango Brewing Company. Our year round beers offer a style for everyone- from the novice craft beer drinker to the hop-head. If you are looking for something different, look no further than our seasonal and taproom exclusives. Our brewers enjoy the ability to experiment and create fun and unique beers using a variety of interesting hops and ingredients. Some of these become taproom exclusives, while others are scaled up in production and become available for retail. Blueberry Wheat has become a fan favorite with locals and visitors alike, and is the only seasonal we release annually.
Amber ale was the first beer brewed in the fall of 1990, but it was the Durango Dark Lager that put Durango Brewing Company on the map with a Bronze medal win at Great American Beer Festival that year. Since then, Durango Brewing Company has gone on to win numerous GABF and World Beer Cup medals over the years.
