Downeast Heritage Museum

39 Union Street
Calais, ME 04619

The Downeast Heritage Museum is a multi-million dollar nonprofit project to unlock, interpret, and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Downeast Maine. The building itself is situated on the St. Croix River Maine's border with New Brunswick, Canada. Between the river and the Museum is a walkway that is the origin point of the East Coast Greenway, a walking and biking trail that will eventually link Calais, Maine and Key West, Florida.

"Downeast" Maine gets its name from a nautical term referring to the region DOWNwind and northEAST from Boston. It usually refers to the part of coastal Maine that is northeast of Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. This region has unique marine and land-based natural attractions, as well as an unusually rich human heritage.

The Downeast Heritage Museum unlocks the culture of the region and can serve as the starting point of a weeklong, two-nation vacation in which every day is filled with a completely different activity.
