About
Daniel Vineyards, LLC, is West Virginia’s most unique boutique winery.
At over 2,500 feet above sea level, the vineyard is home to “cold climate cultivars”. These are vines which must be cold hardy, relatively disease-free, and adaptable to the trellis of the so-called Vertical Shoot Positioning V-shaped system (designed by owner and winemaker, Dr. C. Richard Daniel).
Since the first vines were planted in 1990, Dr. Daniel has experimented with 114 different varieties. At present, 14 varieties are producing grapes. These include:
* Cornell University Hybrids (Cayuga, Chardonel, Traminette)
* French-American Hybrids (Seyval, St. Vincent, Vidal, and Vignoles)
* Native American (Norton)
* Swenson Hybrids (Brianna, Esprit, and Sabrevois)
* University of Minnesota Hybrids (Frontenac, La Crescent, and Marquette)
Dr. Daniel converted the 192 acre Twin Oaks Golf Course into a 20 acre vineyard, and a three acre Blueberry patch. Blueberry plantings will more than double in the near future to include early, mid, and late season varieties. This will extend the Pick-Your-Own Blueberry season from early June thru early September each year.
Four venues are available year round for events such as weddings, anniverseries, birthday parties, class and family reunions, fundraisers, business retreats, and more.
Of over 21,400 farms in West Virginia in 2008, the Vineyards was judged one of the best conservation farms in the state. A deer training fence, Canadian Hemlock, and Lombardy Poplar surround each of the five vineyards. More than 225 Rose bushes are planted at both ends of each grape row.
Elaborate landscaping surround the winery, deck, gazebo, and pavilion. The view is spectacular from any place on the property. The Hexagonal gazebo (30-foot diameter) sits on the seventh green of the old golf course.
The wines consistently win awards and medals at state, national, and international wine competitions. Best Seller: Blackberry and Port with several others of the reds and whites.
