Chowan Golf and Country Club (CGCC) is located in Chowan County, approximately 7 miles east of the town of Edenton, on property that was established in 1861 as historic Mulberry Hill. Originally owned by the Blount family, the property was acquired by the Wood family in 1863. During the early 1940s, the US government acquired a portion of the land to train military personnel during and after WWII until the property was obtained by the town of Edenton in 1959.
The original 9-hole Chowan Golf and Country Club, Inc. was established in 1962 on a 135-acre tract of land that had been part of the US Marine Corps Outlying Field. CGCC expanded to an 18-hole course in 1989, through the cooperation and generosity of Tom Wood, the developer of Mulberry Hill Plantation, which surrounds the "back 9" holes. Since then, a new clubhouse has been constructed that includes a pro shop, ballroom and full kitchen. A swimming pool, 3 lighted tennis courts, driving range and practice green round out the facilities available at the semi-private club.
