Center Stage Theatre :
Center Stage Theatre (CST) began in 1974 as Comstock Community Theatre (CCT).
In the early 1970s, several friends saw the need for a place in the Kalamazoo area for families to experience theatre together. A place that would nurture talent, teach a variety of skills, and entertain and excite audiences. Comstock Community Theatre was born…to be a place where everyone could discover the love of theatre.
The theatre’s long tradition of summer musicals began in August of 1974, with shows in the small auditorium of the then Comstock Middle School, later the Adult Education Building, on 26th Street.
In 1991, members of the Comstock Community Theatre Board of Directors were part of the committee that helped design the auditorium to be added to the Comstock High School.
In 1992, Comstock Community Theatre moved into the newly opened Comstock Community Auditorium. The first production on the new stage was Winnie the Pooh, in January of 1993.
In 2003, Comstock Community Theatre changed its name to Center Stage Theatre to better reflect the continual growth of the organization and the audiences.
Over the years, the Center Stage Theatre family has included youth and adults from throughout Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Allegan counties. In addition to the large summer musicals, Center Stage Theatre produces smaller shows in the spring and fall of each year. Currently, the fall production is a children’s show performed by young people, while the spring performance is often by adults for adults.
Comstock Community Theatre /Center Stage Theatre has been fortunate to have thousands of dedicated volunteers on the stage and behind the scenes. Without these dedicated volunteers, Comstock Community Theatre /Center Stage Theatre could not have produced 37 seasons of wonderful memories.
Theatre is a force that can unite, uplift, teach, inspire, and heal. Center Stage Theatre will proudly continue to give people the opportunity to experience the wonder that is theatre.
