Cascade River State Park

Come to Cascade for the rushing river and grand waterfalls that lay within a gorge, lush with moss and ferns that grow on black volcanic rocks. Hike the trail through birch, spruce and white cedar; stop to see the views of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. Trails connect with the Superior Hiking Trail and the North Shore State Trail and offer great recreational opportunities to hikers and cross-country skiers. Drive-in and backpack campsites are available.

Camping

Drive-in Sites 40 Sites
Six drive-in campsites are available in winter. Three have electricity and three are non-electric.

Pull-Through Sites 4 Sites
RV Length Limit 35 Feet
Length is measured from front of tow vehicle to rear of vehicle being towed.

Backpack Sites 5 Sites
Walk-in sites are located .5 to 1.5 miles from parking area.

Group Camp 2 Sites - Each accommodates up to 20 people
Camp accommodates tents only, no vehicle access. Campers will have a short hike of approximately 75 yards to the campsites. Facilities include: rustic vault toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. Water is located approximately 1/5 of a mile from the camp. For group camp reservations, contact the state park reservation service. Group camp closes for the season at the end of October.

Trails

Summer

Hiking 18 Miles
Trails take the hiker through a variety of terrain. Many scenic areas along trails. The Superior Hiking Trail also runs through the park.

Winter

Cross Country Skiing 17 Miles
Trails range from easy to difficult. One loop is available for the less experienced skier. Trails connect to other local trails outside the park.

Snowmobile 2 Miles
There are two miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the park that provide access to local trail systems, including the C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Trail.

Snowshoe Anywhere Except Groomed Trails
Please stay off groomed ski trails.

Summer

Picnic Area 7 sites on Lake Superior's shore

Picnic Shelter Enclosed Shelter
Shelter is open-year round and can be reserved by calling the park. Includes picnic tables, wood stove, and beverage machine.

Winter

Warming House In Picnic Shelter
The enclosed picnic shelter is used as a warming house in the winter. The building is heated on weekends and holidays through the cross-country ski season. Firewood can be purchased at the park office to heat the picnic shelter on weekdays.

Water

Water Source Lake, river and stream
Fishing Lake Superior, Cascade River and other streams in the park
