In 1990 a committee was formed in Van Meter, Iowa for the purpose of establishing a museum honoring Van Meter native Bob Feller.
Several fundraising projects were held including Feller being Grand Marshall of a local Fireman's Kids Day in June and which was covered by CBS. Charles Kuralt interviewed Bob Feller that day and the interview was aired on the popular CBS show, Sunday Morning. Ted Williams came to Iowa in 1993 to an Iowa Cubs (AAA) game held at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines and a fundraising dinner was also held. These fundraisers were instrumental in developing the necessary resources to begin the museum and people such as Bill Knapp, Hal Manders and Tom Synhorst were instrumental in the fundraising efforts.
Brenton Banks donated the land in Van Meter for the museum and in April 1994 ground breaking took place. The architect for the building was Steve Feller, Bob's son.
The grand opening was held on June 10, 1995. It was a great day for the town of Van Meter with over 800 people attending and touring the new museum that day.
