Belmont, from the French belle monte, means "beautiful mountain." The top of Belmont Mound is 1,400 feet above sea level. From the tower atop the mound in the center of the park, you can see for many miles in all directions, to the Wisconsin River valley, Iowa and Illinois. Wisconsin's First Capitol historic site is a half mile west of the park.
Activities and recreation
Hiking
The park has 2.5 miles of hiking trails. The trails go around the base of the mound, through the center of the park and to a loop in the northeast corner of the park. The trails are mostly for hiking, but off-road bikes may also use the trails. The observation tower is closed.
Picnicking
There is a picnic area near the park entrance with some playground equipment.
Hunting and trapping
Hunting and trapping are allowed in the open areas of the park during the Wisconsin state parks hunting and trapping time frame. Trapping is not permitted in closed areas as noted on the park hunting map or within 100 yards of any designated use area, including trails. Certain trap types are restricted on state park properties.
Winter activities
The park is open year-round for snowshoeing and winter hiking. Trails are not groomed for skiing.
