Avalon was the name of an island with a castle upon it. It was called "The Island of the Blest." It was the home of King Arthur of Britain. Avalon was also said to be the abode of Oberon, King of the Fairies, who was endowed with magical powers.
In its early days, legend has it that the bare island was used as a cattle range by the families of the island. The name Avalon was given to 7 Mile Beach by Reverend Charles Bond, who was a brother-in-law of the president of the first real estate syndicate.
In 1887, a syndicate known as Avalon Beach Developing Company purchased the island. It seems that it was their intent to make Avalon one of the most fashionable and exclusive resorts on the Jersey Coast. The syndicate reportedly spent one half million dollars in public and private funds for improvements. The founders dubbed Avalon "The Jewel of the Jersey Coast."
This could be considered the real beginnings of the resort. Since that time, Avalon has always kept its charm and atmosphere as a real family resort. You may find you want to stay forever.
The Avalon Museum and Historical Society is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to preserve the history; spoken, written and pictorial, of the community of Avalon. To this end, the primary goal of the Society at this time is the construction of a museum which is available to the community for research and education.
