The original Augusta Brewing Company was opened in 1889 at 13th and Fenwick streets in downtown Augusta and was Georgia's first brewery. Its first beer, Belle of Georgia, was an instant success. The brewery's product line grew rapidly in a market with few - if any - regional competitors. Other beers included Dixie, Extra Lager and Belle of Carolina "export quality" beer, as well as soda waters, colas and ginger ales.Â
Prohibition came to Augusta on May 1, 1916, however, and the prosperous home of Belle of Georgia beer eased toward an uncertain fate. The company changed its name to Augusta Ice & Beverage and replaced its quality brew with nonalcoholic "near beer" in hopes of staying solvent. By March 6, 1921, the company announced its bankruptcy. The Augusta Brewing Company buildings were demolished in 1964.Â
