Why the name Alosta?

In the late 1800's there were two very different towns in So. California, one was a town named Glendora, which was a thriving citrus growing town founded by a very staunch Methodist named George Whitcomb, who saw to it that Glendora did not allow liquor to be bought, sold, manufactured or consumed within the town limits. The other was a small, town just to the south called Alosta. Alosta was founded by a U.S. Marshall by the name of George E. Gard. Unlike Whitcomb, Gard had no problems at all with alcohol, in fact, Gard's town of Alosta had a well-stocked bar in its hotel, a dance hall and a saloon. The two feuded bitterly over the years, until eventually, the town of Alosta disappeared. In the years to follow, Glendora acquired the land Alosta once occupied, and eventually incorporated it into their city.

For decades, Alosta was recognized in the city of Glendora as one of the main streets that ran from one end of town, to the other, as part of the portion of historic U.S. Route 66. In the late 1990's, the name Alosta was dropped completely, and the street took on the Route 66 name.

We feel it is time for a revival (of sorts) for Alosta. Which is why we have set out on this venture to bring local, craft brewed beer to the region once known for it's laid back atmosphere. What better way to bring locally crafted beer to the community, than to honor the name of the regions long forgotten neighbor?

What's with the Water Tower in the Logo?

The Town of Alosta was originally formed out of the Alosta Land and Water Co.  We felt a water tower in our logo is a good way to preserve the legacy that George Gard started back in 1887.

Our Background

We are avid homebrewers that have been brewing (collectively) for over 30 years. Over the last decade our homebrews have won numerous awards at various local, regional, and national competitions. In 2010, founders of Alosta Brewing Co. were instrumental in getting their local homebrew club invited out to do homebrewing demonstrations during the run of the Los Angeles County Fair, and have been subsequently invited back each year.

Our Brewers

Herb Adams / Brew Master:
With over 20 years of homebrewing experience and much success at the homebrewing competition level, Herb likes to put a spin on traditional styles.  Herbs involvement in the home and craft beer brewing community goes back almost as far with his Glendora public access show: "Brewing With Herb," and a series of pub crawls that he has hosted.  Alosta Brewing Co., is Herb's next stop, and he intends to bring some wonderful brews to the local area.

Brendan Wehrly / Head Brewer:
Brendan took up an interest in homebrewing after watchnig his stepdad brew for a couple years. Truth be told, before homebrewing, Brendan didn't even have much interest in beer, as much of his exposure has been to mass produced, flavorless beers. In his short 6 years of brewing, Brendan has stepped his way up the ladder to become President of his local homebrew club, Crown of the Valley Brewing Society, as well as serving on the planning committee for the 2011 National Homebrewers Conference.  His passion for and experience with barrel-aged and sour beers will bring some amazing dynamics to the Alosta team.
