African American Children's Theatre

325 West Walnut Street

What began as a one-time musical theatre production by a group of excited young people has turned into an enduring Milwaukee treasure. The African American Children's Theater (AACT) was founded in 1989 after the tragic deaths of two young men. Their friends sought healing by putting on a play, and wanted to continue to offer more safe and constructive activities for other youth.

Since then, the AACT has rallied youth around a simple idea: Come, experience the joy of theatre and be magically transformed into students who excel, young people who can become our future leaders.

Now, AACT meets a multitude of community needs through its youth programs and community outreach efforts. Hundreds of youth have crossed our stage, discovering their talents through musical theatre.

AACT provides opportunities for participants to learn about their heritage and see positive, non-violent images of African American life. Our after-school theatre sessions equip girls and boys with discipline and teamwork in a safe learning environment. Youth can also explore the connections and similarities of a variety of cultures and their traditions through related arts workshops.

Year after year, our performances for school groups, organizations, and family and friends demonstrate the need for expanded arts opportunities where the greater Milwaukee community can see its children participating in meaningful and productive activities
