Welcome Greater Spokane!
This year marks the formal acknowledgment of the Greater Spokane area as a focus community for AARP Washington as we continue our commitment to serving Washingtonians aged 50 and older across our state. Energized by an inspired group of local volunteers, our outreach and advocacy efforts are intentionally focused on increasing our local presence in the region.
The first and most crucial step in community engagement: show up and listen. We want to know what matters most to older adults, their families, and their communities in the Greater Spokane area. AARP Washington staff and local volunteers have made significant progress by engaging directly with hundreds of AARP members and participants at several local events including Movies for Grownups and The Spokesman-Review’s Active Living Expo. At the Expo, the region’s largest wellness event for older adults, 138 individuals participated in an activity to identify which AARP Washington priority issues, such as social security or family caregivers, hold paramount importance for them personally.
Recognizing the importance of the 2024 election on the lives of older adults, a local team of nine AARP volunteers rallied together this Spring to empower 50+ voters in Congressional District 5 to make their voices heard. Working in close partnership with AARP staff, the Greater Spokane Voter Engagement Team has already made a critical impact in the lead-up to the primary elections, ensuring that our voter engagement events make sense for local communities.
Bolstered by the collective energy of seasoned volunteers as well as new recruits, AARP Washington has gained valuable insights into the strengths and needs of our communities in Greater Spokane. As we look to the future with our growing cadre of volunteers, AARP Washington is poised to continue raising up the voices of older adults in the Greater Spokane area and across our state.
