Thank You, Volunteers!
April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the people who dedicate their time, energy and skills to give back to their neighbors, communities and states nationwide. And AARP is thankful for all the thousands of volunteers who work with us!
They're in communities throughout this nation – offering free tax-filing assistance, helping people learn safe driving skills, meeting with local leaders to improve the lives of people 50+ and their families, creating experiences that connect people, and more.
Volunteering is one of the most selfless acts of service you can do for others. Big and small contributions can help make someone's day and improve lives. Plus, there's no greater feeling than knowing you helped make a difference.
For AARP Ohio volunteer Chris Hughes, volunteering is a source of happiness.
"I love volunteering with AARP because I receive so much joy and support in my activities."
The spirit of volunteerism in the Black community is deeply rooted in a culture of caring for each other and the community. Take Charlene James, who has been volunteering for AARP and other organizations in Houston for years.
"I've always been interested in doing work for the betterment of mankind, or society as a whole … I always believe that we should be of service when we have the ability to do so," James said recently.
Any time is the right time to come together and give back, not just during National Volunteer Month. AARP encourages you to find ways to do good deeds for others and to share your appreciation for all the volunteers in your community – a smile and a "thank you" go a long way.
Gary Cecil, an Air Force veteran from Georgia, says he enjoys volunteering with AARP “because it keeps me active, informed and young at heart.”
