Statement from Dana Marie Kennedy, AARP Arizona State Director, on Passage of Critical Housing Legislation

Posted on 05/21/24 by Dana Marie Kennedy

AARP Arizona commends Governor Katie Hobbs for signing House Bills 2720 and 2721. AARP believes that affordable housing solutions require a diverse set of options. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are a valuable tool to help communities broaden housing choices in single-family neighborhoods. They are a crucial component in tackling the affordable housing crisis that impacts older adults throughout Arizona.

AARP’s 2021 Home and Community Preference Survey indicates that 79% of adults aged 50 and older want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. According to the survey, 64% of adults would live in an ADU or in-law unit for a variety of reasons, such as to live close to someone but maintain their own space, to get help with daily activities, or to save money. Additionally, 62% stated that they would consider building an ADU on their property for a family member or loved one who needed care.

With ADUs as an option, individuals and families can make informed decisions to address their unique needs, while also expanding affordable housing options across Arizona. The passage of this legislation is a critical step in meeting the demand for quality, affordable, and accessible housing for older Arizonans.
