Protect Your Identity: Texas Shred 'Em Day is Coming
AARP Texas is ready to help you protect yourself and your loved ones against fraud and scams.
The AARP Fraud Watch Network and the Lone Star State are gearing up for a colossal "Texas Shred 'Em Day," a free statewide paper shredding event on Saturday, May 18. AARP offices in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio will tackle identity theft and highlight its prevalence by hosting shred events and providing information and resources on how to beat scammers at their own game.
Texas State Director Tina Tran says identity theft, fraud, and scams impact everyone, especially older adults and military veterans. "Criminals are using psychology and technology to target and victimize these vulnerable communities. Texas Shred 'Em brings attention to this growing problem, and it's a concrete action to help the public fight identity theft. It's an opportunity to remind everyone that AARP has free information and resources to keep Texans informed on the latest scams." Tran urges the public to visit http://www.aarp.org/BeatScammersTX for more information on AARP's fraud-fighting resources.
To safeguard against identity thieves, follow these two steps: collect personal and financial records, then shred them at your nearest AARP-sponsored shredding event to dispose of documents safely. Unlike the "Texas Two-Step," these moves are much easier to follow, but you must register today using the link for your city. Registration helps us determine the number and size of the shred trucks we will need.
