AARP Colorado’s staff and volunteer-led advocacy team scored more than a dozen public policy victories for the 50-plus during the 2024 Colorado General Assembly.

“We’re incredibly proud of our team for being fierce defenders of consumers and Coloradans of all ages,” Advocacy Director Karen Moldovan said. “We engaged on a wide range of issues, making a positive impact on pocketbooks and our communities’ overall livability.”

High-profile legislative wins from the last session include a duo of property tax relief bills making the Senior Homestead Property Tax credit portable, as well as reinstating the Senior Housing Income Tax Credit. Older Coloradans qualifying for the credit can receive up to an $800 tax refund in 2024. Through another legislative victory, the tax burden on Social Security income was also reduced.

Turning to housing itself, AARP Colorado supported legislation making Accessory Dwelling Units (sometimes known as “mother-in-law suites”) easier to build in certain metropolitan areas by reducing permitting fees and providing a mechanism for obtaining affordable loans, as well as down payment assistance.

A brief report on all of AARP Colorado’s state legislative victories is available for review.

If you’re interested in making an impact on public policy, as well as both the health and financial security of Coloradans, consider joining our nonpartisan team of volunteers working across the aisle.

“Our efforts to empower the 50-plus to choose how they live as they age continues,” Moldovan said. “AARP members and their communities can expect our advocacy team to show up strong for them.”
